Facts and Figures
In case you're wondering what we Richmond parrot heads do to keep busy, here are just some of the ways in which we gave back to our community and the world in 2008:
- 17 club members and a flock of flamingoes cheered on the participants in the Monument Avenue 10K, and won an honorable mention award for our spirit booth.
- 9 club members poured beer at the First Annual Richmond Folk Festival held in downtown Richmond.
- We collected 22 toys to Toys for Tots at Christmas.
- 19 members poured beer at the State Fair of Virginia.
- 16 members poured beer at the Richmond Animal League's Woofstock event. (I'm seeing a pattern emerging.)
- We donated 437 pounds of canned food and $100.00 to the Central VA Food Bank.
- 42 club members volunteered their time and skills to making our 14th annual Stars on the Water party/fundraiser a success. We contributed $5,300 to the Alzheimer's Association, $1,500 to St. Joseph's Villa, $500 to the Central VA Food Bank, and $500 to Give Kids the World from Stars' proceeds.
- 14 members provided 500 bananas to hungry walkers at the Alzheimer's Memory Walk.
- We shipped 404 gently-used books to troops in the Middle East as part of Operation Paperback.
- We donated 90 pet items to the Richmond SPCA.
- We donated $100 to the PHIN Fund set up by Paradise Charitable Foundation to assist PHiP club members whose lives are devastated by natural disasters.
We also made financial contributions to the following charitable organizations:
- Tropics Exotic Bird Refuge
- Make-A-Wish Foundation
- Ukrop's Golden Gift Program
- Richmond SPCA
And, last but not least, 20 PHC of Richmond members sacrificed their vacation time, hard-earned cash, and, in a few cases, their healthy livers to attend the 17th annual Meeting of the Minds convention in Key West, Florida, October 30 - November 2, 2008. It was a grueling experience, but somebody had to do it!
